City Trip to Lisbon, Portugal with Kids

Lisbon, the charming capital of Portugal, is a worthwhile travel destination not only for adults but also for families with children. The city offers a wealth of activities and sights that will delight little explorers. In this blog post, we provide an overview of family-friendly Lisbon and share some valuable tips for a successful city trip to the Portuguese metropolis with your children.

The Climate - on the Sunny Side

Lisbon's climate is Mediterranean, offering mild winters and warm summers. You can visit this beautiful city almost all year round. The best time to visit Lisbon for a short trip with children is from April to June or September to October, when the weather is pleasant and tourist crowds are somewhat smaller. In mid-summer, temperatures often climb above 30 degrees, which might be too hot for a city trip with children. Despite the heat, there is usually a pleasant breeze in the Portuguese harbor city. All in all, families can visit the city almost all year round.

Sights: Experiencing Lisbon with Kids

Lisbon offers a wealth of activities and attractions for children of all ages. From historic monuments and lively streets to picturesque parks, delicious treats, and fun transportation, the Portuguese capital offers an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Normally, you explore the city on foot, but with children, we can highly recommend Uber rides, as the costs are very reasonable (approx. 5 euros for a 12-minute ride). Here are our tips for excursions with children in Lisbon:

Oceanário de Lisboa – the Second Largest Aquarium in the World

The Oceanário de Lisboa is an impressive oceanarium located on the former Expo grounds and an absolute highlight for families visiting Lisbon. It is situated in Parque das Nações, a modern district on the banks of the Tagus River.

The Oceanário is one of Europe's largest aquariums and is home to a variety of marine habitats and species from different parts of the world. The enormous main tank simulates the open ocean, where sharks, rays, and a variety of colorful fish species can be admired.

For families with children, the Oceanário offers many interactive elements and activities. Children can explore various aquariums where they can touch fish or learn about starfish and other marine creatures.

The Oceanário is an interesting excursion for the whole family and offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the fascinating world of the oceans. Tip: A cable car goes directly to the Oceanário; your children will love the ride there. And the Oceanário has probably the best museum shop - a real highlight.

Tram 28

The famous old Tram 28 is one of the most well-known tram lines in Lisbon, Portugal, and an absolute must for visitors to the city. It runs on a picturesque route through narrow streets, steep hills, and historic neighborhoods (including Alfama, the oldest district), offering a unique way to explore Lisbon.

Tram line 28 extends from Martim Moniz Square in the heart of the city to the Campo Ourique district. During the ride, the tram passes through narrow streets, steep hills, and historic neighborhoods that give Lisbon its unique charm. The wooden paneling, squealing brakes, and rattling sounds evoke a sense of bygone times.

Tip: If you're staying at the Martinhal Chiado, you can easily take line 28 from the Pç. Luis Camões stop, right near the hotel, to the beautiful Jardim da Estrela park. Get off at the large church (Basilica da Estrela); the entrance to the park is directly opposite, featuring a café and a large playground for various age groups. Be sure to use the tram early in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds.

Elevators, Lisbon's Lifts and Viewpoints

Another highlight for children are the Elevadores, lifts from one district to the next highest one. Especially the Elevador de Santa Justa in the Baixa district is highly recommended. From up here, you have a spectacular view over the entire city. Portugal's city of seven hills offers a wonderful overview from many points. From the Miradouros (viewpoints), you can beautifully overlook the city and reward yourself for the climb with a coffee or something small to eat. We visited the Miradouros St. Luiza and the viewpoint Miradouros da Senora.

During a tour of the old town, we took a ride in a TukTuk from Mon Ami Tours – unfortunately a bit expensive at approx. 60 euros for an hour. But it was worth it with the children, as their tired feet could recharge their energy and we comfortably reached the beautiful viewpoint Miradouros da Senora.
