Baby's First Sleeping Place: Cradle, Co-sleeper, or Cot

Baby's First Sleeping Place: Cradle, Co-sleeper, or Cot

It is advisable to have a baby bassinet or crib ready after birth. The baby will feel very comfortable in it for the first few months. It is also practical to place this crib next to the parents' bed at night, near mom. Alternatively, you can opt for a co-sleeper that can be attached to mom's bed. This way, your little one is right next to you, and you can react immediately if they need something without having to get up. Around the sixth month, the baby bassinet or Moses basket becomes too small, and some babies already start sitting independently.

From this point on, it makes sense to put the little one in a baby bed. This will then be either in the parents' bedroom or already in the nursery. If the baby bed is convertible, it can even grow with the child. Baby beds with adjustable mattress heights are sensible. In the first few months of life, the mattress can be placed higher to allow for easier placement and removal of your baby. When the baby becomes more mobile and can already stand, a lower-mounted mattress prevents them from falling out of the bed. Some of our models even offer the option of a crawl-through opening and/or conversion kits to a junior bed. As soon as the child is independent enough, they can then leave the bed alone. Additionally, there are baby beds that can be converted into a small, cozy sofa bed or transformed into a bunk bed. This guarantees long-lasting enjoyment of the baby bed.

Baby Mattresses

Make sure to choose a high-quality children's mattress. Good ventilation is important for a healthy sleeping environment. A cover washable at 60°C is practical. We recommend a baby mattress with an integrated air-permeable moisture protector, so no additional waterproof pad is necessary. Safety edges along the long sides of the mattresses protect the baby from getting their feet trapped when standing in the crib. A baby side and a toddler side, adapted to the baby's weight, ensure optimal lying comfort.

Textiles

Since there will be the occasional mishap in the baby cot, the mattress needs protection. The soft fitted sheets create a cozy bed, while a moisture protector or a mattress topper protects the mattress from unexpected soiling. Together, they create a comfortable and hygienic sleeping environment for your baby.

The cot bumper is a cuddly addition to the baby cot equipment that provides not only comfort but also safety. It creates a confined, cozy environment that gives the baby a feeling of security. The cot bumper serves as a gentle protection against drafts and prevents the baby from accidentally bumping themselves in their sleep. It is a loving and functional addition for a newborn's peaceful sleep.

Sleeping Bag

A well-fitting baby sleeping bag is indispensable for the early baby period. When buying, make sure to choose the right size so that the baby has enough room to kick but their head cannot disappear into the sleeping bag. Pay attention to breathable materials that promote the baby's well-being. Tip: A zipper in the front area is practical for easy putting on and taking off. Choose sleeping bags according to room temperature and seasons to provide the newborn with a safe and comfortable sleeping place.

Changing table

Changing table

Super practical and sustainable for a baby's basic equipment are changing tables that can still be used as a chest of drawers after the diaper age. With these models, the changing top can be easily removed. Large changing tops have the advantage that the little one can move around freely and parents have enough space for care. Pay attention to rounded corners and sufficient storage space for diapers, creams, wipes, and clothes. A soft-close system ensures that drawers close comfortably and, above all, silently, and prevents baby's small fingers from getting pinched.

What also shouldn't be missing from a baby's initial equipment is a changing pad. The changing pad cover should be easily machine washable. A well-organized changing table is a great relief for new parents. With practical storage solutions for the changing table, you'll have everything at hand: wet wipe dispenser, paper towel dispenser, basket with diapers, possibly a small lockable box for cotton pads, and a water bowl. As your baby becomes more mobile, nothing on the changing table is safe anymore. Tip: Silicone bowls do not break when dropped on the floor and are therefore wonderfully suitable as a water bowl for washing.

A night light on the changing table not only looks nice but is extremely practical if a diaper needs to be changed at night.

Of course, diapers shouldn't be missing from the changing area, because you'll need a decent amount of them - whether disposable or cloth diapers is up to you to decide. Muslin cloths are the practical "all-purpose weapon" for young parents - they can be used as a changing pad, burp cloth, sunshade, or even a bed liner.

In our article on setting up a changing area, you can find out everything you need to consider when it comes to the changing area.

Baby Essentials - Well-prepared from the start

BREASTFEEDING / FEEDING

In the beginning with a baby, you spend many hours a day breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your baby. With the right equipment, breastfeeding & feeding becomes a loving and relaxed routine that strengthens the bond between parents and baby.

Nursing pillows help you to maintain the correct posture while feeding. We offer long and shorter nursing pillows. The shorter version of nursing pillows is widely used in some countries, such as Denmark and the USA. We find this variant particularly practical for breastfeeding, as they are handy and not as "bulky" as the classic, longer nursing pillows. However, the latter can be very valuable during pregnancy. They help the mother find a comfortable sleeping position despite the baby bump and can later be used as nursing pillows.

Träumeland, Stillkissen, Baby Erstausstattung

Muslin cloths, swaddles, burp cloths or whatever else they are called, are a must-have in any baby's first equipment. You can use them anywhere, as a light blanket, maxi scarf, shower and beach towel, (feather-light in luggage and quick-drying), nursing cover or burp cloth. Burp cloths are simply practical and available in many great colours & prints.

The pacifier is another useful accessory for the first baby period. Besides its calming effect for the baby, it can also support breastfeeding in the first weeks. Symmetric, "cherry-shaped" teats are more similar to the shape of the nipple, which is why some babies prefer them. Anatomically shaped (asymmetric) teats adapt better to the jaw, at least if the size is correct. Which teat your baby prefers needs to be found out.

CLOTHING

Choosing the right clothing for your baby's layette is crucial to ensure comfort and well-being. Bodysuits and rompers are essential basics that facilitate diaper changes, keep the baby warm, and allow for plenty of freedom of movement.

Babymode, romper, bodysuit

An important tip when choosing baby clothes is to consider the size, as newborns grow quickly. Make sure to have clothes in different sizes ready to meet the needs of the growing baby. We recommend getting the first baby clothes in size 50, but feel free to ask us for advice if you are unsure. The quantity also matters: Many underestimate at the beginning how often a baby needs to be changed. Whether it's spit-up stains or a diaper accident, you will change your child several times a day at the beginning, which you should consider when buying the initial equipment.

Soft, breathable materials are particularly recommended to protect the delicate skin of the newborn. Many manufacturers now rely on organic materials and use cotton, linen or the all-encompassing miracle fabric merino wool-silk, such as the baby clothes from Engel, Joha, Hvid, Minimalisma and co. It is also important to consider what time of year your baby is born and adapt the clothing to the weather. It is best to buy the first set of baby clothes half in sizes 50/56 and 62/68.

With the right initial baby clothing, you not only create a comfortable start but also a loving and stylish first impression for your little family member.

BABY CARE

Baby care is a gentle and loving routine that not only promotes cleanliness but also the bond between parents and baby and leads to a positive body image.

Once your baby is born, the first bath is due after about a week. Usually, young parents are guided by the postnatal midwife during the first bath.

Choosing the right bathtub is crucial for a pleasant bathing experience. It should be stable and ergonomically designed to safely support the baby. A non-slip bottom provides additional safety and makes bathing a relaxing ritual. A bath thermometer helps you achieve the correct bathing temperature.

After a gentle bath, your baby deserves a cozy bath towel, preferably with a hood to wrap around their little head. Choose soft, absorbent materials that are free from any harmful substances to comfortably swaddle the baby. Bath towels with cute prints add a playful touch to the care routine.

For gentle cleaning, soft washcloths are recommended. Make sure they are hypoallergenic and free from harmful chemicals. Use warm water and mild, specially formulated baby washes to protect sensitive skin.

Baby care

Choosing the right care products is crucial. From diaper creams to gentle shampoos – look for hypoallergenic, dermatologically tested formulas. Natural ingredients are often the best choice for lovingly caring for your baby's delicate skin. We recommend products from Alma Babycare, as they rely on natural ingredients and protect delicate baby skin. Less is more: Gentle cleaning with lukewarm water is often sufficient.

BABY TOYS

Baby toys are not only cute but also crucial for your newborn's sensory and motor development. For the layette, it is important to choose toys with contrasting colours and different textures to stimulate the baby's senses. Rattles, soft plush toys, mobiles and teethers are ideal companions that not only capture attention but also promote grasping and touching. The latter also support your baby during the difficult teething period. Remember that baby toys should be safe and non-toxic to safely support your little explorer's curiosity. Invest in age-appropriate toys that offer not only fun but also developmental impulses.

On the go with baby

On the go with baby

Mobility with a baby requires a well-thought-out initial setup to be fully prepared on the go. A stroller is indispensable – it offers not only comfort but also flexibility for various terrains.

Strollers & Carriers

Choosing the right stroller is not easy and should be carefully considered, as the stroller will accompany you for 3-4 years with your first child, and even longer with subsequent children. Our combination strollers can be converted from a bassinet to a buggy and, depending on the model, even extended into a sibling stroller. As long as the baby cannot sit independently, it lies in the bassinet, which, by the way, can also be used as a travel cot or, in an emergency, as a "mobile changing table". As soon as your baby can sit independently, from about 6 months, you can convert the stroller and mount the sports seat. Sun protection and rain protection are essential accessories for the stroller.

For winter babies, we recommend that young parents purchase a footmuff for the bassinet, and in summer, a light blanket made of natural fabric like wool or cotton. It's best to visit our stroller store for advice. We have many test models on site that you can try out.

In addition to the stroller, many parents use a baby carrier. A baby wrap can prove to be incredibly practical in everyday baby life during the first months, and many babies are better soothed, especially in the first weeks of life, when carried. The baby wrap allows the newborn to be carried close to the body, which promotes closeness and security. Once your baby has gained some weight, a baby carrier with a newborn insert can also be used.

A diaper bag should also be on your list, because having such a bag handy is simply practical and necessary: whether diapers, wet wipes, spare clothes, changing mat, or toys, everything should have a place in your diaper bag. A truly practical diaper bag has hooks on the sides to hang it directly on the handle of your stroller. An additional backpack option is also advantageous so you have your hands free. We find diaper bags particularly useful that you can continue to use as a bag or backpack later, when the baby years are over.

A practical diaper pouch is perfect for short outings to keep the essentials compact and within reach.

On the go in the car

A car seat is essential for safe travel in the car. For the first few months, we recommend purchasing an infant car seat. The big advantage of this is that you can lift the baby out of the car in the infant car seat and, for example, place it directly on the stroller. Infant car seats that can be adjusted into an ergonomic reclining position outside the car are particularly recommended. This way, if the baby has fallen asleep during the car journey, you can let it continue sleeping peacefully in the flat reclining position.

A car seat with a rotation mechanism on the car seat base is also very practical, as it allows the seat to be turned towards the door. This makes it easier for you to lift your child in and out of the car.

From an age of 12 to 18 months, depending on the manufacturer, you can then switch from an infant car seat to a car seat. All our infant car seats and car seats comply with the highest safety regulations.
